Two members of the School Council from each year group went to Skipton Girls' High School on Friday 9th October as a first step in building links with a different school.
Skipton’s Assistant Head, Miss Greenwood, welcomed Feversham students by saying that there were many similarities in the two schools as well as differences and this was an opportunity for the students from both schools to begin to understand both communities.
Mrs. Noor introduced Feversham’s new School Council members and explained that by thinking about charities the students could get to know each other whilst working together for something worthwhile locally, nationally or internationally. She told Skipton Girls about the fundraising that Feversham had done recently raising money for Marie Curie, £1,000 for The British Heart Foundation (national) and £1,800 for The Elizabeth Foundation (local). She reminded all the students that they are the voice of the future.
Over lunch the students discussed the kinds of charities they would like to support. In the feed back it was clear that the students were already thinking about regular fundraising events in future including ‘something big, such as a summer fair, as a joint effort in the future.’ Feversham’s Hall was the proposed venue for this great event.
Some Charities suggested by the groups:
- Breast Cancer
- Stop the Traffik
- Barnardo’s
- NSPCC
- Water Aid
- Make a Wish
- Oxfam
- Yorkshire Air Ambulance
- Fair Trade ( themed competition, stalls and catwalk)
- A local charity like Tom’s Trust in another part of UK started by the parents of a victim of gun and knife crime.
The students also had many suggestions about how to raise money. Mrs Noor asked them to choose a charity which they thought would be the easiest to raise funds for. The general consensus was to support Stop the Traffik
Mrs. Excell outlined the idea of a Sponsored Walk from Shipley to the Five Rise Locks at Bingley along the Leeds-Liverpool canal, which passes near to both schools. The 5-mile walk would be in school time on a Friday afternoon. This seemed to meet with general approval and the students enthusiastically said they would need some time to prepare for the walk by designing forms for sponsorship and posters to raise awareness of what they were intending to do.
Whilst the students were discussing their ideas, the staff also discussed ideas for future projects to link the schools:
- A joint Summer Fair
- Joint visit to Skipton Castle for Year 7 (already in the Feversham Curriculum)
- Discussions to improve speaking and listening - so that students could learn about received pronunciation (RP) and more academic language
- Debates on various Ethical issues
- Sponsored walks
- Joint support for Fair Trade
- Oxbridge support from Skipton for Feversham students
- Invite Skipton Head teacher to be inspirational guest speaker at Feversham Speech Night
- Celebrate our diversity day – tackling stereo types; Islamophobia; misconceptions; what can be done to live together in harmony; students make reciprocal visits to talk to both schools
- Take Feversham Heritage project to share with Skipton students
Even though the visit only lasted for about an hour, the students from both schools were at ease chatting to each other, sharing experiences and ideas. The event was a great success and gave hope that there would be many future projects across the curriculum and year groups, which would be of great value to both schools. Miss Greenwood was also keen to explain how valuable the students from Skipton had found their visit to Feversham for the Eid celebrations.
