The study of science fires students’ curiosity about the world around them. Whilst at Feversham College, they will develop as young scientists carrying out investigations to find their own explanations.
They will discover how scientific ideas contribute to technological change – affecting
industry, business and medicine and improving our quality of life. They will learn to question and discuss issues that may affect their own lives and those faced by society.
In Key Stage 3 there is a new emphasis on personal, learning and thinking skills:
- Team working
- Independent enquiry
- Self-management
- Reflective learning
- Effective participation
- Creative thinking
We aim to develop these important life skills through the context of the following science topics:
In Year 7 they will study:
Term 1
- Cells
- Chemical reactions
- Electrical circuits
- Particle model
Term 2
- Acids and alkali
- Solar system
- Variation in living things
- Energy
Term 3
- Solutions
- Forces and their effects
- Environment and feeding relationships
- Reproduction
In Year 8 they will study the following topics:
Term 1
- Elements and atoms
- Food and digestion
- Heating and cooling
- Respiration
Term 2
- Compounds and mixtures
- Magnets and electromagnets
- Sound and hearing
- Microbes and disease
Term 3
- Ecological relationships
- Light
- Rocks and weathering
- Rock cycle
In Year 9 they will study the following topics:
- Inheritance
- Metals
- Plants and the environment
- Chemical reactions
- Speed
- Pressure
- Moments
- Healthy living
Key Stage 4
At key stage 4 there are different courses on offer. All students study a GCSE in Core Science in year 10. This covers aspects of biology, chemistry and physics. The students sit 6 multiple choice exams of 30 minutes each. There are 2 exams for each science discipline.
Core Science units:
In Biology:
- Human biology
- Evolution and environment
In Chemistry:
- Products from rocks
- Oils, Earth and atmosphere
In Physics:
- Energy and energy resources
- Radiation and the Universe
In Year 11 there are 3 routes students follow:
Additional Science, which builds on the biology, chemistry and physics studied in year 10. This course together with the Core Science is worth 2 GCSE’s
Additional Applied Science, this course looks at the work of forensic scientists, food scientists and sports scientists. This course has one exam worth 40% and school assessed coursework worth 60%. This course together with the Core Science is worth 2 GCSE’s
Triple Award Science, this gives the students the option to study for 3 separate GCSE’s in biology, chemistry and physics. Many of the students who study for this option go on to study science A Levels and study science related courses at university
