Textiles
 

KS3
Textiles is taught in Yr 8 and Yr 9 for half a year during a double period through the Design and Technology National Curriculum.

In Yr 8 pupils learn the basic fabric constructions, learn how to research, learn how to use the sewing machines by making a small bag and develop their evaluation skills.

For 10 weeks at the beginning of Yr9 9 the pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of fabric construction and learn the basic fibre groups, they also learn the properties and characteristics of cotton and ployester fabrics.
Pupils are introduced to the computerized embroidery machines, digital printing and using their knowledge ad understanding of these two techniques. They design and embellish a shop bought T-shirt.




After completing a 10-week project in each food and textiles the pupils will then choose whoch subject they would like to study for the remainder of Yr 9. If they choose textiles they will complete a design and make project involving researching, designing, making and evaluating a cushion cover for a specific aid user. Pupils will achieve their final KS3 lever thorugh delivery of this project.

If pupils wish to study textiles at GCSE they must opt out of texties for the later half of Yr 9.

KS4 textiles
This is one of the options availabel to options in pupils in Yr 10 to study GCSE Design and Technology (textiles). At the beginning of the course surface pattern and decoration are explored and developed using a variety of techniques such as: silk painting, digital printing, applique, stencilling and quilting. Students complete a mini project in Yr 10 and then start their GCSE controlled assessment in April of Yr 10 until February half term in Yr 11. the controlled assessment accounts for 60% of the GCSE grade and there is a two hour exam, which accounts for 40%.
A variety of products are made which include wall panels, bags, prayer mats and screen dividers.

KS5 Product Design (Textiles)
At KS5 students can chose to further their studies of Design and Technology through A- Level Product Design. Fashion illustration, the study of fashion designers, textiles science and marketing are some of the areas students will study. Garments, interior products and fashion accessories are some of the products that students can design and make.
